Concrete moisture is both necessary and dangerous at the same time. When pouring floors, concrete is created by mixing water with gravel, sand, and cement which is a chemical combination of limestone, calcium, silicon, aluminum, iron and other ingredients. The water is necessary to mix and combine the ingredients.
Once the flooring is poured, the concrete sets and begins to dry. This is the process of excess concrete moisture evaporating over time. Drying time varies from a day or two to several weeks. The size of the slab and its pores, temperature, and humidity all affect the drying time.
It is extremely important that concrete floors are properly dry and cured prior to installing any flooring over the concrete. Issues that result from installing flooring over improperly cured concrete include:
- warped flooring
- adhesion failure
- peaked seams
- cupping and/or buckling
- extra humidity in your home or other building
- condensation
- insect infestation
- harmful mold
- unpleasant odor
And worst of all, it results in wasted time and money.
What can you do about it?
By hiring a V-8 certified flooring contractor or installer, you can be assured that any concrete moisture levels will be properly addressed. The moisture level of your concrete floors will be measured, and your concrete will be sealed and prepared appropriately prior to your flooring installation.
V-8’s REV M.V.P. (Moisture Vapor Protection) system was formulated to reduce the incidence and protect against concrete moisture issues in both green and old concrete. The fast drying, 100% solids epoxy product can be applied to newly poured concrete after just 24 hours eliminating the need for a 28-day curing period.
