Have you ever wanted to start your own business as a flooring contractor, but don’t know where to start? V8 is here to help. Here are five tips to consider as you begin your new career.
Get trained and get some experience. V-8 High Performance Floors offers training to get you started. We have a training package with DVD, written instructions, literature, and more. We also offer hands on training at our facility.
What better place to practice than on your own floor? It is best to have a rookie mistake happen on your own floor. Find a place in your home or business to get some real world experience before jumping out onto customer’s floors.
- Get licensed and insured. This protects you and your potential client from any issues that might arise later during the installation process. Neither you nor your client want to be held liable if any accidents happen to you or the home.
- Show examples of past work. If you really want to gain the confidence of a potential client, show them work you’ve done in the past that resembles the floor coating project they’ve inquired about. This will give them a sense of what a final product will look like and can help you secure jobs against other flooring contractors who didn’t show any past projects they’ve completed.
- Be selective. As critical and careful homeowners are when selecting flooring contractors, so should you be when choosing jobs. You don’t have to jump on every opportunity that comes your way. For one, you don’t want to burn yourself out or overestimate the amount of work you can do during a set period of time. Secondly, not all people will be easy to work with—too high of expectations and getting underpaid can happen if you don’t take the time to lay out the whole scope of the project with the client ahead of time.
- Ask for a testimonial and/or referral. When you do finish a project, ask for your clients to send you a testimonial via email or have them submit one to Google in order to give your reputation a boost. People often look at reviews of a product or service before buying and those reviews can be the reason they pick you over your competitors. Additionally, asking for a direct referral can earn you almost guaranteed business.
Do you want to become a successful flooring contractor? We have the tools and the training necessary to help you reach that level. Give us a call today for more information!
