Before you begin installation of flooring, it is extremely important to test for concrete moisture. Skipping this step can result in major issues down the road, wasting time and money for you and your clients.

If the moisture level is too high when the new flooring is installed, there will likely be an adhesion failure. The moisture will be trapped under the coating, but over time, hydrostatic pressure will force that moisture upwards. Installing at the wrong time can result in peaked seams, cupping, and/or buckling. The floor can expand so much that it lifts up, creating a gash in the floor.

Concrete MoistureConcrete is mixed generously with water when poured, and the excess water evaporates over time. The speed of the evaporation will be determined by the temperature and humidity of the surrounding air. It will also be affected by the size of the pores in the concrete. These factors make it impossible to blindly guess the level of moisture in any concrete slab.

To ensure proper installation, the key is to wait until the moisture level reaches an equilibrium point or is acceptably close to it before sealing. Pinpointing that specific equilibrium point sounds relatively simple in theory, but can be difficult to measure.

There are many tests used to determine concrete moisture. It is recommended to test throughout the space, especially if the area is large, in order to get a more accurate result.  One of the most common testing methods is to tape a piece of plastic to the concrete, wait 72 hours, and get a reading on a dew point hygrometer.

Most of the issues happen down the road, when reinstallation is pricey and inconvenient.  In order to avoid issues with your customers, a proper concrete moisture test can guarantee a smooth installation.
